This
"Brick Art" section is focused on work by Bill Wyatt using simulated
Brick Wall patterns that are currently being shown in the front window
at Y-Que.
Over the last couple of years I have been painting and
printing with plaster, resins and hybrid plaster materials in an attempt
to make durable artwork with graphic images. Brick patterns have become
an underlying theme as a brick wall is the ultimate exterior product
and it makes a perfect background for almost anything. A brick pattern
is decorative and interesting on its own. Currently there are 8
different brick wall effects in the front window of Y-Que in Los Angeles
that show various methods I used to make simulated brick wall patterns.
The wide range of casting materials I used are surfboard resins with
atomized metals as a gel coat, hybrid plasters with acrylic polymers and
various coatings each with a surprisingly different result.
The
textures and materials I have been using to make the brick walls
sometimes evoke a sense of sculpture, that is when the final product
actually comes out looking like real bricks. The techniques that I am
using to make these thin brick walls are a combination of skills I use
for screen printing t-shirts and photo-fresco casting. Each brick panel
can be used on it's own like a blank canvas to be painted on or it can
be displayed as a final piece of art itself without a design or graphic.
There is something comforting when I look through a framed brick panel
on the wall as if the entire wall is made of brick and I am looking
inside the wall.
There are two general categories that these
experiments fall into. Photo-Fresco: Flat printed image on the surface
that is embedded during the setting of plaster. Screen Painting: A
raised effect using screen printing and painting typically on recycled
printing frames. Both of these styles can be spray painted with a design
afterwards or coated for additional durability and displayed as a brick
panel. A final Top Frame is included with the Photo-Fresco pieces as a
part of the casting, but it is not required for the flat Screen Painting
pieces. The Top Frame can be added as an option at an additional cost
to the Screen Painting pieces.
The wide range of materials like
gypsum plasters, acrylic mediums, pigments, spray paints, and in some
cases epoxy, vinyl and surfboard resins all have different results for
potentially different uses and styles. Although I can make fully weather
resistant strong brick panels with graphics using boat building and
surfboard materials, I generally try to stay away from the polyester
resins and epoxy as much as possible. Ultimate durability isn't required
since these aren't really going to be used as exterior tiles. I have
been testing the durability of the materials by displaying the brick
walls outside on my truck and in the front window of the store, which
are relatively harsh and critical environments.

Y-Que
will also be distributing a line of t-shirts, as blank t-shirts, that
have a background brick pattern printed using discharge inks that can be
worn as they are or printed afterwards similar to how the brick wall
pieces can be used.
